Key Note: Greg Andresen - Senior Researcher One in Three Campaign Australia

Greg Andresen is the father of a young son and daughter. He is passionate about building an Australia that will provide equality of opportunity for both his children across all areas of life. His major areas of interest are boys' education and rites of passage, family violence, fatherhood, men’s health and media representations of males.

In 2009 Greg co-founded the One in Three Campaign, the sole national advocacy organisation for male victims of family violence, and since then has worked as its Senior Researcher. He has edited the Men’s Health Australia website (including a research and media liaison role) since its 2007 inception.

Since 2009 he has also acted as Australian Liaison for the National Coalition for Men, a US educational organisation that raises awareness about the ways sex discrimination affects men and boys.

Presentation Overview:
This presentation will outline what we know about the experiences of male victims of family violence and their children. We will look at the barriers to their disclosing and finding support, the different forms of abuse they experience and the impacts upon them.

We will review the scant support currently available in Australia for male victims of family violence and their children, outlining the few counselling and support services, few and/or generic help-lines, minimal government and NGO community education and prevention programs, and the rare and often non-Australian printed and/or online resources.

We will briefly look at some promising recent overseas and Australian support initiatives that could be adopted more broadly. Short video interviews with male victims of family violence will be played, followed by group discussion about what is different for men when they are victims of family violence and what would make it harder for them to disclose their experiences. Lastly, we will discuss what service providers need to know in order better support male victims.

Key Note: Ken Clearwater - Manager Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust

Ken has been working in this area for the last 20+ years and is passionate about raising the awareness around male survivors of sexual abuse; from working in prisons to training the police, and lobbying government. Ken speaks around the world on this topic. He has also supported men who have had institutional abuse and raised the awareness of this issue in New Zealand.

Ken will be talking about his journey, what it is to be a survivor, how to support men who are survivors.
