Artspace gallery is proud to present a special exhibition of wood turning and carvings by the Wellington Woodworkers Guild.

On show and for sale will be an amazing collection of artworks created by world class artisans of wood. The artists have used a wide variety of mostly native woods but also included driftwood and even an old fashioned wood plane carved into a tanwha.

One of the lead turners of the group, nationally renowned woodturner, Hugh Mill, has specially created a set of bowls carved out of an old standing kauri tree. The Kauri tree had died about 10 years ago had been left standing dead before it was harvested in Coromandel last year. Hugh thus calls this tree Cora Kauri. What is unusual about the wood is that the beautiful figure/grain can be found throughout the whole tree and not just in the head log or root system as one would expect. The artworks that Hugh has created using it have turned out exquisite.

Hugh says ‘The Kauri tree. Bugs had infested it to a depth of about 3inches in that time.’We are so used to Swamp Kauri and its colours that we forget what the wood from standing kauri would look like. I have tried to remove the bug holes as much as I can but have left a few marks in order to get a viable finished piece as I think the grain in the wood is as good as I have ever seen. ‘’

This exhibition opens on Saturday, March 3rd from 1 – 5pm during which time retired Hutt surgeon, Archie Kerr and new carving colleagues will present free carving demonstrations. There will be further demonstrations during the exhibition – see the gallery facebook page for details.
