Ticket Information:

  • Admission - Waka Ride: $50.00

Enjoy a rare opportunity to ride on one of our traditionally carved waka (canoe) on Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) waterfront.

The experience starts when you are welcomed at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke (the waka house), home to three traditionally carved working waka (canoes). A mihi whakatau (welcome) and whakawhanaungatanga (introductions) set in the modern and friendly environment of Te Wharewaka, spoken in both Te Reo Maori and English, provides visitors with an insight into the Maori culture. After a safety briefing and allocation of a personal flotation device and a hoe (paddle) visitors then walk on to Wiriwaka our floating pontoon and into ‘Poutu’ our waka.

Most tours are conducted in the safety of the lagoon as it is a fairly weather protected space, and with perfect weather conditions and at the discretion of the kaihautū (captain), the waka can travel out into the harbour. The Waka Ride does not require you to paddle, however if you feel like paddling in unison to the Kaihatu (captain) calls, then you can do so, or you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the Waka Ride. The experience finishes with a poroaki (farewell) back in the Te Wharewaka (waka house), where we wish you well on your journey.

Cost $50 per person. Single and group bookings are accepted, with a minimum of 7 passengers required for the ride to go ahead.

Available daily from Monday 26 June to Saturday 1 July 2017 at 9 am, 10 am and 11 am
