Brookby Equestrian Park lies in the rural setting of the Ardmore foothills. Owners Bruce and Grace Nisbet are strong believers in halting the environmental decline that has happened in this area over the past century.

In partnership with Conservation Volunteers, Bruce and Grace have great plans to fence off 3 tributaries of the Papakura Stream to stop cattle and sheep from grazing too close to the waterway.

This October, 2,000 plants will be planted within the fenced areas to help prevent erosion, filter runoff from the paddocks and provide habitat for native birds, lizards and invertebrates, as well as providing a better habitat for fish.

Riparian zones (areas next to waterways) are extremely important because of their role in soil conservation, their habitat biodiversity, and the influence they have on fauna and water ecosystems, including grassland, woodland, wetland or sub-surface features such as water tables.

We’d love your help on Saturday 30th September to plant native trees and shrubs by the waterways and/ or on Saturday 7th October as we assist with nursery work, fertilizing and pest plant removal to improve the biodiversity of this important area. You can join on one or both days.

For all our projects, volunteers are guided by a qualified team leader who teaches about the site and its environmental issues and guides you through the tasks at hand. We provide all tools and equipment needed and even provide transportation from our offices in Eden Terrace to the site and back. You can also choose to meet on site if you prefer.

It's free to join of course but bookings are essential. To sign up or find out more about this or our other projects please email info@cvnz.org.nz or just give us a call on 0800 56 76 86.
