Nature versus nurture. Nature loads the gun. Nurture pulls the trigger. Did Nurture pull the trigger in my grandfather's case? In Valerie's case? Or did Nature pull the trigger long ago, and we're all just waiting to feel the bullet?

Valerie uses music, genetics, and story-telling to unravel creator Robin Kelly's family history of mental health.

Valerie fell in love but then her world disintegrates, and the show becomes a vulnerable personal story of Robin's own struggles with mental health issues. It becomes a love letter from grandson to grandmother. A way of saying 'thank you' for keeping his mother safe through unimaginable trials. A celebration of resilience, compassion, and love.

A powerhouse voice, a fantastic story teller. It will be one of the most talked about performances in the Festival.

“A beacon and lesson for our future. A challenging, innovative and beautiful piece of work." (Theatre Scenes)
"Beautifully polished, striking, recommended" (NZ Herald)
"Valerie is... avant-garde, intensely cerebral and emotionally visceral" (Theatreview.org.nz)
“As close to a perfect piece of theatre as I could think of... so violently to my taste that I wanted to keep it close to me forever” (Pantograph Punch)
