Topic: Tarawera, Terraces and Travellers' Tales - the accounts of Rotomahana and the Pink and White Terraces as recorded by six women tourists, 1877 -1886.

Light refreshments will be provided at the beginning of the meeting. All welcome. Gold coin collection for non-members.

‘A land of wonders - heaven and hell in alternate glimpses.’

Hear and see eye-witness impressions of 19th Century Rotomahana and the Pink and White Terraces, prior to the 1886 Tarawera eruption.

Non-members are welcome at Rotorua U3A’s Community Forum on Wednesday 15 February to Rotorua’s highly respected historian, Phil Andrews. Phil’s PowerPoint presentation, entitled Tarawera, Terraces and Travellers' Tales, is based on his 2013 publication Women in Wonderland and focuses on the descriptions of Rotomahana and the Pink and White Terraces as recorded by six women tourists between 1877 and 1886.

One of these is wealthy 19th Century Scottish travel writer and landscape painter, Constance Gordon Cumming. Of Rotomahana she wrote: “Now, indeed, I have found a land of wonders... and much as I had heard of it, the reality far surpasses my expectations. It is heaven and hell in alternate glimpses, so marvellous is some beauties, so dread the horrors...”
