Carmel Courtney With Ari Freeman Songs of Tom Waits (The Piano Has Been Drinking).

An enthralling night of songs by the melancholic, melodious and mercurial mood merchant - the one of a kind, world-weary, wise and wizened wordsmith - Tom Waits.

Bringing songs into play are two distinctive voices - The smoke and honey of Carmelita Toots (Carmel Courtney) and the gravel and leather of Blues Professor (Ari Freeman). Together with Simon Gregory (guitar) Mike Kime (bass) and Doug Brush (drums) there is plenty of whack, precision and wonk in this line-up to evoke the nostalgic worlds of Tom Waits - worlds that pulse with dreams of the forgotten, ones where the band is always playing boozy tales about brawling sailors and ballads of misfits and lovers.

A famous song or two, the beatnik, the rant, the poignant, the angular, the sweet - the songs span Waits illustrious career to date and with an intimate loungey lighting design by Mike Friend (LAF Theatre) straight lines will blur. This show swims between theatrical mediums, the then and the now.

Step right up...

Presented by Carmel Courtney & Lyttelton Arts Factory, in association with The Cavell Leitch New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival.
