Nau mai, haere mai - you are warmly invited to a ritual for the whole whānauwhānaufamily to mark the arrival of Matariki, the Māori New Year.

During the evening, we:
- Celebrate the people (tangata), and earth, sea, and sky (whenua)
- Mark the beginning of Matariki
- Hear stories of renewal.

The ritual begins with the lighting of a fire. We retell the story of the separation of earth and sky, and the creation of the world according to Māori tradition.

The evening continues with the story of Tāne, who adorned the heavens with stars. Discover the phases of the moon and the days of the maramatakamaramatakalunar month.

Please bring small tokens of your loved ones. You can place these on the fire to honour, farewell, and acknowledge the year just passed, and to offer gratitude and thoughts for the year to come. A small amount of food will also be cooked on the fire.

This event is part of the programme for Matariki Rising 2017.
