Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley was a great alto saxophonist who came on the jazz scene during the hard-bop era in the 1950s and 1960s. The nickname 'Cannonball' was derived from 'Cannibal' - he was known to have a huge appetite.

Cannonball moved to New York from Florida in 1955, the year that Charlie Parker died. Initially, he moved to New York for graduate studies. However, after being asked to sit in with Oscar Pettiford’s band when their saxophone player was late to the gig, those who had seen his performance began referring to him as the rightful heir to Parker’s jazz throne.

In 1957 he formed a group with his trumpet playing brother Nat Adderley and was noticed by Miles Davis, who asked Cannonball to join his band. In 1958 they recorded Milestones as well as Cannonball’s first solo album, Somethin’ Else - two very influential albums, and went on to record Kind of Blue – another pivotal album in jazz history. After leaving the Davis group, Cannonball and Nat formed the Cannonball Adderley Quintet.

Eilish Wilson comments, "I came to know the blues-rooted playing of Cannonball when I was 13 years old, growing up in Nelson. My saxophone teacher Tim Parker introduced me to the recording of ‘Mercy Mercy Mercy’, which was from a live album called Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at 'The Club'. I fell in love with Cannonball's big alto sound and groovy, bluesy improvising. His music is joyful and I can listen to him play for hours on end. The band that Ben and I have put together was specifically formed for a series of Adderley gigs - we will be coming fresh from the Wellington Jazz festival to the Hawke's Bay Jazz Club."
