It is the tragedy of the Soul were attracted by Desire, it soon stoops to error. Brought to its senses by suffering, it turns for help to the redeeming Spirit within, finally shedding a blessing on mankind in the climax of the story.

We begin with a brief look at the life of author Mabel Collins, then delve into the key events of the story. Finally, we explore the symbolic meaning of the characters and events as they relate to theosophical concepts and understandings.
