The Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway was New Zealand’s first 3 foot 6 inch gauge railway and was opened in 1873. Originally opened under the Otago Provincial Council the line started operation with two double Fairlie locomotives named Josephine and Rose and was very English in its rolling stock and operation.

It was an important part of Otago’s development as it linked the city with its main deep water port. This presentation will look into its rich history.
