This screening of the documentary series, Tangata Whenua includes the following two episodes:

The Great Trees:
There is a saying about the old leaders 'He Totara Whakaruruhau.' - they are the great trees giving shelter from the wind. This episode looks at Putauaki, the sacred mountain near Whakatāne, the burial place of the chiefs of the Ngāti Awa tribes, and Hikurangi, Ngāti Porou's mountain, and the lives of those that live in the shelter of those mountains.

The Carving Cries:
In a Tokomaru Bay meeting house, there is a carving which the people say will weep when something in the Māori world is lost. This episode sees Māori Battalion members remembering their lost comrades, a Kotahitanga meeting discussing the politics of Māori nationalism and Witi Ihimaera returns to Waituhi and contrasts Māori and Pākehā ways of life.

This screening is to support the Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision Matariki: Tau Hou 2017 programme
