Portraiture features prominently in Tēvita Ma’ameivai Lātū’s second exhibition at Northart. An interest in Basquiat and Picasso influences the Tongan-based artist’s experimentation with mixed media, as he portrays people and events that have significance for him.

Schooled on the North Shore and at Auckland Grammar, Lātū returned to his homeland of Tonga after graduating from the National Art School in Sydney. There he established Seleka, a contemporary art group that assists underprivileged youth through various art and painting projects.

During his trip to Auckland, made possible by Creative Communities, he will also tutor two free youth workshops at Northart on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September. Interested schools and individuals should contact the gallery for more details and to book.
