In preparation for their Festival performances in Mallorca, Spain, Cathy Irons (violin), Sharon Baylis (viola) and Tomas Hurnik (cello) present a glittering programme of classical and romantic music. The trio is very excited to be offered the opportunity to perform in Europe later this year and the proceeds from this concert will assist them to travel to the Festival.

Described by critics as “high spirited,” “fun overflowing” and having “splendid coordination and attack,” the trio continue to explore light and elegant lesser-known classical repertoire. They create a pure, well-blended sound by using minimal vibrato and blending the sonority of the three stringed instruments to give a luminous resonance. Their aim is to bring music to life with warmth, life and beauty.

Carl Friedrich Abel - Trio Sonata no.1, Op. 16.
Johann Andreas Amon - String Trio no. 2, Op. 8.
Johann Georg Albrechtsberger - String Trio no. 1, Op. 9a.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Quartet no. 1 in G Minor, K. 478.
Ernst Dohnanyi - String Trio Op. 10.

Anna Maksymova (piano) will join the trio in Mozart's Piano Quartet no 1 in G minor, K478. She will be remembered for her brilliant performances of Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 2016.

Door sales (cash/cheques only) are also available.

Cathy Irons is a violinist in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) often as acting assistant concertmaster. She is also the CSO Community Engagement Project Leader. Cathy performances throughout NZ include the IceFest, the Platform Festival, the New Zealand Jazz and Blue Festival, the Body Festival, the Dunedin Fringe Festival, the Chinese Spring Festival and Arts Festivals in Christchurch and Nelson.

Further afield, she has performed in Europe, Japan, Australia and South Africa. Cathy is skilled and experienced in collaborating with existing composers. With an interest in composition and contemporary music, she performs at new music workshops and has commissioned and premièred New Zealand, Australian and South African compositions. She has formed a partnership with Australian violinist Dr Joanna Drimatis, annually performing NZ-Australian music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Another string to her bow, is her cross-over jazz playing in her group, The Classical Jazz Quartet.

Sharon Baylis played with several regional orchestras in New Zealand while studying in Wellington. She then moved to Europe where she performed with numerous European orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a founding member of the "Florestan Kwintet" - a piano quintet based in Rotterdam back in 2009-10. They won a chamber music competition at the Rotterdam Conservatory in 2009, which resulted in concerts in the chamber hall of de Doelen in Rotterdam and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, amongst several other engagements. In 2012, she was appointed the principal viola of the Orquesta Filarmonica de Cali in Colombia. She returned to New Zealand in 2013 and took up the position of the associate principal viola in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 2016.

Tomas Hurnik received his masters at the Academy of Music in Prague, Czech Republic. While studying Tomas was an active performer, playing and recording as a soloist with various Symphonies and as a member of chamber groups, for Czech radio and concerts both in Czech and abroad (Germany, Austria, Japan and France). In 1998 he was hired as the principal cellist for the Malaysian Philharmonic in Kuala Lumpur with which he played for four years. He then returned to Europe to study Baroque cello in Frankfurt and performed with a variety of period instrument chamber groups such as Musica Florea, Capella Regia Prague, Musica Aeterna and Solamente Naturali. He now plays as the Associate Principal for Christchurch Symphony.
