‘Farewell Waiheke Godwits’ will celebrate the seasonal migratory flight of Waiheke’s resident godwit flock back to the Arctic, marking the end of summer: with an afternoon tea hosted by Piritahi Marae, and disinstallation of a community-painted godwit-cutout-flock of 45 ‘godwits’ encircling a pohutukawa tree standing at the gateway entrance of the marae.

This is right by where a flock of 10-20 real godwits often roost by the western foreshore of Blackpool Beach / Te Huruhi Bay, while eastwards across the island at Te Matuku Scenic Reserve about 120 godwits have been sighted this sojourn year.

This family/community event culminates the godwits’ sojourn on Waiheke from their arrival about 7 months earlier in September-October 2016. The first Godwits Welcome Home celebration on Waiheke and the painted godwits flock installation was held 9 October 2016 with a welcoming powhiri - the start of a Waiheke seasonal ritual.

All baking welcome! Good cheer, and pitching in to help clean-up before the event closes at 5pm would be appreciated. Thanks to the Waiheke Local Board for funding the afternoon tea hosted by Piritahi Marae.

If travelling to Waiheke Island: please take the 12:30pm Auckland-Waiheke ferry at the latest, which should give sufficient bussing & walking time of about 20-25 minutes to reach Piritahi Marae (53 Tahatai Rd, Oneroa, Waiheke Island); please cross- check www.fullers.co.nz for timetables and fares. Alternatively: earlier half-hourly ferries run from morning onwards.
