Love the sea and Studio Ghibli animation? Ponyo is a beloved Hayao Miyazaki epic fantasy comedy, originally released in 2008, for children of all ages.

Though inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid fairytale, this family-friendly tale is feel-good, with a happy ending. Screening will be in Japanese, with English subtitles. Watching Ponyo at Waiheke Cinema - completely furnished with couches - will be a real cosy afternoon experience.

The intent of sharing this koha screening is in commemoration of Christopher Wragge - who co-created the WaihekeLibrary-HaurakiClassroom winter lecture series begun in 2016, and co-founded and guided the work of the Waiheke Island Community Planning Group (WICPG) with vital community others from 2004-2016 - who transitioned 5 Oct 2016 after a gradual 3.5-years’ terminal unwellness; Ponyo touched him with resonant depth in its playful evocation of a sense of wonder and at-one-ment at the beauty and vitality of the forces of Nature.

Bookings essential.
Please call Waiheke Cinema (09) 372-4240 to book your reservation, to avoid disappointment, as the cinema seats a maximum of 50 people.

In your phone message: please speak clearly, as return calls will not be made unless there is a problem; please firstly name the movie title, then the session time, then the number of people, and lastly: your name and contact number.

You can also make reservations in person at the cinema. Reservations are not possible by email. Please call again if you need to either cancel or make changes to your reservation (with the same instruction advice to follow – stated above).

If you’ve reserved tickets: please turn up earliest 1.30pm to latest 1.50pm to pick up your tickets before the 2pm screening start. If fully booked: depends on the Waiheke Cinema volunteer (the cinema is completely run by volunteers) in charge!

Admission is by donation ($5 suggested) or koha, to cover community-cinema rental needs.
Gift vouchers are also available from the cinema.

If travelling to Waiheke Island: please take the 12.30pm Auckland-Waiheke ferry at the latest, which should give sufficient bussing/walking time to reach Waiheke Cinema (please cross- checkwww.fullers.co.nz for timetables and fares. Alternatively: earlier half-hourly ferries run from morning onwards.

If walking from Matiatia Wharf to Waiheke Island Community Cinema, a pleasant amble (depending on the weather) might take about 30 minutes. It would be greatly appreciated if, upon screening’s end: all viewers legibly wrote their feedback for Seaweek on forms received upon entry, along with pens; all completed forms will go into a draw for a special Seaweek prize!

Post-screening feedback will also be greatly appreciated if shared onto Hauraki Classroom’s Facebook page.
