Kiwi North

Something for everyone in the family at Kiwi North these holidays.

Social history and natural history, including living native animals, all in one place. October is Save the Kiwi month, and it is quite apt that both our kiwi have birthdays in October, turning 1 year old.

We offer the only captive kiwi and tuatara viewing in Northland. 2 young North Island Brown Kiwi in a state-of-the art nocturnal house, replicating their wild environment including dusk and dawn, night and day temperatures and seasonal temperatures, growing plants and running water. It even rains twice a week!

Kiwi feeding with keeper talk is 3 times per day - 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Although they are happily foraging in their home and in and out of their burrows as they wish, the feeding times do offer photographic opportunities with some of the feeding tubes placed in 'moonlight' spots. Also the keeper is available to answer questions.

Please note - No lights of any sort in the nocturnal house.

Flash the Tuatara will be out for a close encounter Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the 2 weeks of the holidays, after the 11am kiwi feeding. This always at the keepers discretion as the animals welfare is our top priority. We have many species of native gecko, and the kids are fascinated by the insect breeding room which supplies food for all our animals.

Relax in our cosy corner with books for the kids to read, colouring and quizzes.

In the Museum we have several displays of local natural and social history - including Whangarei's own Moa discovery story with our own Moa skeleton, and a fabulous WW1 centennial exhibition. Also some of our extensive taonga Maori is displayed here.

Out on the Park there is so much room to relax and for the kids to stretch their legs and use up some of that energy. Explore the original Clarke Homestead built on the property in 1886, the tiny 1860's Oruaiti Chapel, Whangarei women's jail and the 1898 Riponui Pah School House.

We have several resident special interest clubs on site including 2 train clubs. These will be giving rides on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays over the holidays.

Note - The mini trains run on Wednesday only. There may even be a tractor hay-ride on the go.

There are many walks around the Park, including through the beautiful native bush. Please be careful, have suitable footwear and make sure the track is not beyond the capabilities of you or others in your group.

We do not have a café although it is definitely in the future plans. We do have cold drinks, ice creams and snacks. There are 2 very good cafes very close to us and you are welcome to leave for lunch and return. Your ticket is for the whole day.

The Kiwi North Education Officer will be running a holiday programme Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 10 to 12, with fun conservation-based activities.

Children must be accompanied by an adult but that adult is free. The programme will include the Museum, Kiwi House and Tuatara encounter.

Please see the website. Bookings please - admin@kiwinorth.co.nz.

So we hope to see you these holidays, we would love to welcome you to our place.
Our Place, Our Heritage - O tatou turangawaewae, O tatou taonga tuku iho. Kia ora.
