Pacific Film's second feature film, made more than a decade after their first Broken Barrier (1952), and one of only three made in New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s. Produced on a modest budget of 50,000 pounds, it follows what would become familiar New Zealand film-making tropes in later decades: the man alone, on the run and on the road.

"Though unmistakably sincere in it, romantic vision of the tangata whenua and its commitment to alienated young manhood, the film's enduring impetus is in O'Shea's manifest desire to synthesize and translate a head full of European cinema into the wide open spaces of New Zealand." – Bill Gosden, 31st Wellington Film Festival, 2002.
