Are our rivers swimmable or are they swimming in E Coli? Did global warming stop in 1998 or was it just resting? Will a cup of coffee a day ward off liver cancer only to leave you with bladder cancer These days, anyone can find a “scientist” to back up their opinions and bad science seems to be alive and well.

In this talk, Professor Shaun Hendy discusses why science sometimes seems to contradict itself, why fake science seems to thrive on social media, and what we can do about it in a post-truth world.

Shaun Hendy is a Professor of Physics at the University of Auckland and Director of Te Puūnaha Matatini. He received a Bachelors degree from Massey University and studied for his PhD at the University of Alberta in Canada from 1994-98. From 2011-2013, he was President of the New Zealand Association of Scientists.

His research interests include nanotechnology, complex systems, and innovation. He has won a number of awards for his work in the field, including the Prime Minister's Science Media Communication Prize in 2012 and ANZIAM's E. O. Tuck Medal.
