The recent rise of Rocket Lab has created an immense interest in space activities in NZ. Although Kiwis are known for their #8 fencing wire approach to getting things done, the outlook presents us with a number of barriers. How do we approach the complex challenges facing us in the future?

This conversation will examine how space activities can be used to prepare us for uncertainty, reflecting on the personal experience and the achievement of others. Find out how the goals of the Auckland Program for Space Systems can be applied across the entire population and across the spectrum of future issues.

Jim Hefkey currently holds the position of Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland. He is the founder of the Auckland Programme for Space Systems – an undergraduate programme that is currently building a satellite that will go into space at the end of next year.

Beginning his career in Canada before moving to New Zealand, he has 40 years’ engineering experience in manufacturing, automation, and machine design. He is a graduate of the CanSat Leaders Training Program in Japan, NZ contact for UNISEC Global, active in the New Zealand Rocketry Association, and a foundation member of the KiwiSpace Foundation.
