In this lively and provocative talk, Senior Lecturer Davinia Caddy explores the so-called ‘death’ of the professional music critic, asking after the influence of social media, digital technologies, celebrity culture and Bond - James Bond.

With reference to a range of musical examples from Mozart and Van Morrison to Ives and Ice Cube, Davinia investigates how the business of music criticism has developed over the years, and how we all might become better arm chair critics – more intuitive, intent and imaginative – with a little help from our favourite British spy.

Bio:
Following successful completion of her doctorate (University of Cambridge, 2005), Dr Davinia Caddy took up the positions of Junior Research Fellow at The Queen's College, University of Oxford, and Early Career Development Fellow at the Faculty of Music, Oxford. She emigrated to New Zealand in 2009 and is now the Deputy Associate Dean/Research in the Faculty of Creative Arts. She is particularly interested in the inter-relations between music, dance and the visual arts.

A keen writer, Davinia has published a wide array of books, articles and reviews. Her first book for the general public, How to Hear Classical Music, was published in 2013. Davinia has also featured on Radio New Zealand National and Concert, and BBC Radio 4.
