The archaic stereotype of a scientist evokes an image of a white-coated, eccentric, complicated, crazy, evil, dangerous, isolated workaholic slaving away in a laboratory. However, this image is simply the by-product of a lack of communication between scientists and the general public.

Scientists have much to contribute to society, and they have the right and responsibility to do so, especially when it comes to our everyday health decisions. Considering the world-wide political debates surrounding key scientific issues (ranging from global warming to vaccinations), scientists must create an effective dialogue with all people in society.

Join Dr Malvindar Singh-Bains on her journey to dismantle this stereotype. This journey represents her desire to apply scientific knowledge to influence lifestyle choices concerning brain health, create awareness of neurological disease and empower our communities with “true” facts.

Dr Malvindar Singh-Bains is a neuroscientist at the University of Auckland Centre for Brain Research, focusing on how the brain is affected by Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease through studying human tissue. She was a top three finalist in 2015 and 2016 for Young New Zealander of the Year and was named the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame Young Achiever for 2016.

She co-founded the Huntington’s Disease Youth Organisation of New Zealand, a charity dedicated to advocating for young people affected by the condition. She is a science communicator, advocate for brain health awareness, and advocate for brain research who strives to share her science with communities from all walks of life using all media platforms.
