The ‘Knowledge City’ concept was one of Palmerston North’s more recent and sustained attempts at marketing itself. It forms the basis of one of the chapters currently being written for a new history of the city. In the 1990s this slogan was heavily dependent upon the existence of tertiary and research institutions in Palmerston North, promoting their economic benefits to the city and its businesses.

While touching upon the tertiary sector, the first part of this talk will focus more upon the emergence of the city’s schools as institutions which impinged upon the lives of many more of its citizens, past and present.

As places where virtually all compulsorily spend so many of their formative years, schools are inevitably part of the city’s memory landscape. Massey, and the former Teachers’ College, as well as ‘the Tech’ also generated memories, often of a temporary sojourn in the city, release from the constraints of childhood, and a time of transition to independent adulthood.

We hope that many of those attending the talk will bring along written memories of their own participation in the educational institutions of Palmerston North, either as teachers, pupils or parents of students. What was your one key impression of your own, or others’ participation in education and training in Palmerston North?

Margaret Tennant presents the first in a series of public talks, brought to you by the Te Manawa Museum Society.
