Project Baseline Lake Pupuke is a collaborative civil science initiative that works with the Global Underwater Explorers, local authorities, schools & community groups in order to monitor the health of Lake Pupuke, raise environmental awareness and promote community engagement.

The project started in response to anecdotal evidence & concerns from local communities regarding the deteriorating state of this Auckland icon. The goal was to consult with the local Council and identify gaps in the environmental monitoring that they currently conduct.

Once the gaps were identified and the scope was defined the project team set out to recruit passionate volunteers to implement this monitoring programme.

All the data collected from this initiative will be used to complement and enhance the State of the Environment monitoring carried out by the regional council. This will result in a holistic & inclusive approach to environmental monitoring which will ultimately lead to more effective management strategies and a healthier lake.
