Join us for the third in our series of monthly weekend workshops, where you can learn something new, extend your skills and network with other art enthusiasts and practitioners, all at the CAN.

In June we welcome Lisa Feyen, printmaker and mixed media artist to guide you through the complexities and rewards of copper sulphate etching. You will make your own etched aluminium plate with your chosen image and learn how to print it using an etching press. Creating plates with copper sulphate allows you to choose between an intaglio etching or a relief block, and Lisa will guide you through the process of inking and printing using either method to achieve the result you want.

Take the opportunity to make your own plates for printing cards, prints for your wall or as handmade gifts. Explore the images and pattern that can be found in the natural world, and bring along some pictures that you can work from. We will be drawing simple designs that can be translated into a print.

This workshop is suitable for artists that have not tried printmaking before, or those that are familiar with printmaking but haven’t yet tried this method of etching. The course will run over two days, concentrating on plate making during the first day and printing the plates on the second. The pace will be fast and furious, but the aim is to have fun and experiment while you learn!

Copper sulphate solution is safer to use than acid baths and is simple to set up at home once you know how. It is also a technique that can be adapted and developed with experimentation, once you have become familiar with what can be achieved.

Important Info:
Metal plates, inks and papers, copper sulphate solution, resist and graphite paper and the use of a press will be provided at a cost of $25 per person, payable on the first day.

Bring your own small paintbrushes, pencils, sketch books and images that interest you. We will adapt them into something that will work with this form of etching.

Bring your own lunch!

Advance bookings required with limited spaces.
