Cashmere High School, 172 Rose St, Christchurch

All Ages

An unforgettable evening full of lively Polish folk dances and songs. The programme includes a varied display of Polish national and regional dancing by the Lajkonik ensemble visiting from Sydney, and a local folkloric group Polonus. Their performance will be a dynamic display of colour and musicality, including live vocal and instrumental music and featuring many regional costumes of Poland.

Lajkonik (pronounced Lay-kon-ik) has actively participated in the cultural and social life of the Polish community in Australia for 27 years. It is loved for its colourful, diverse dance repertoire, the energy and passion of its accomplished dancers, and its promotion of Polish culture at events and celebrations. Lajkonik is the only dance group in history to have performed Polish folk dances on the summit of Australia’s Mt Kosciuszko in full costume, in February 2007. It has also participated in festivals in Poland and regularly travels to festivals in other states of Australia.

Polonus was established in early 2014 by the members of the Polish Association in Christchurch. It's the first Polish folk dance group in Christchurch, integrating different age groups, including second generation Poles. Since its formation, Polonus has performed at several multicultural ceremonies (e.g. Race Relations Day in Oamaru and Ethnic Football Festival) in Christchurch. It also performs annually at the Culture Galore festival and similar events around Canterbury. In December 2015, Polonus participated in the PolArt festival in Melbourne, the largest Polish Arts festival outside Poland. Most recently, it performed at the Akaroa Music Festival at the closing day concert.
