We’re ‘diving’ into 2017 with our first Play On play reading for the year – The Swimming Lessons by Jackie van Beek.

A quirky comedy about family, fruit, dreams and drama.

Held monthly at Abracadabra Bar and Cafe, Play On is a play reading series of New Zealand work in a casual setting. There is no cost to attend the event, a koha donation is optional. Seating is limited so it’s best to get there early to get a good spot (and to take advantage of happy hour from 5pm – 7pm!).

So come ‘sink’ some beers, ‘freestyle’ your way through the menu, and ‘float’ along to our night of entertainment. No more puns, we promise.

Running time approx. 50 minutes (note: some language and content may offend)

Presented by Big Picture Minor Deets by arrangement with Playmarket.

About the play:
Lizzie has an uneasy relationship with her fruitarian mother, a day job that involves testing river water levels, a sister and a father who have run away to China and a new boyfriend. When Lizzie’s sister comes home unexpectedly, her mother starts to ferment and the water levels rise dramatically while her life is thrown into turmoil.

About the playwright:
Jackie van Beek works as an actress, writer and director in theatre and film. She has recently starred in Funny Girls and What We Do in the Shadows. Her debut feature film The Inland Road, which she wrote and directed, has just been selected for the Berlin International Film Festival.
