Come and join us at 6:30pm on Friday 23 June, for the official opening of this year's photo exhibition: Cultural and Natural Landscapes of New Caledonia, by Daniel Maviet.

Over the last few years, the Government of New Caledonia and Dr. Yves Lafoy, the Official Representative of New Caledonia to New Zealand, have played a major role in promoting the French language and French-speaking world cultures (“La Francophonie”) in New Zealand, and in Palmerston North in particular.

Their generous support resulted in the opening of the “New Caledonian Cultural and Education Corner” in 2015 by Dr Yves Lafoy in presence of the Palmerston North City Mayor Grant Smith and city councillors. Located in the Alliance’s French Library, this space boasts a unique collection of art books, novels, comics, travel guides, CDs and DVDs and is a window of this beautiful country in Palmerston North City.

In 2016, the Government of New Caledonia also created a position for a language assistant at the Alliance Française Palmerston North, which contributed to strengthening New Caledonia’s profile in Palmerston North and throughout Aotearoa.

New Caledonia being a French-speaking country, as well as New Zealand’s closest neighbour in the Pacific, the Official Representative of New Caledonia to New Zealand and the Alliance Française Palmerston North are committed to strengthen the relations between New Caledonia and New Zealand.

In 2017, this cooperation takes a new turn with the latest exhibition which highlights the “Cultural and Natural Landscapes of New Caledonia” and shares more of this country‘s treasures with the New Zealand public.

The exhibition also aims at increasing the awareness of New Caledonia’s cultures (French and Kanak) and its pluri-ethnic diversity.

The exhibition will be on at Square Edge Gallery from Friday 23 June to Tuesday 18 July.

The photos of the local winners of the Alliance Française Foundation’s International Photography Competition on “Fashion and Dress Codes” will also be featured in the Gallery Space.
