Paint Making (and Painting) with Earth Colours

Sorry this event has been and gone

  • Sat 2 Sep ’17, 9:30am – 3:30pm

Wellington High School, 249 Taranaki St, Mt Cook, Wellington Show map

Come and make paint so it lasts hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Paint making is easy, fun and somehow quite emancipating - in this one-day workshop, you'll make a range of colours from earth pigments, sourced from around the country. These will be ground with egg to make tempera paint and you'll go on to learn some painting techniques so you can make our own paintings on card.

All materials included in course fee but bring pencils, paper, an apron and any personal paint brushes you may have (optional). Come along with an idea for a 40x40cm painting, and if you already have some earth pigments, clays, etc, that you would like to turn into paints, bring them as well. Tea and coffee is provided but bring some snacks and lunch.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:
- Describe where to locate suitable earth pigments
- Demonstrate how to make tempera
- Demonstrate how to make a basic acrylic paint
- Demonstrate how to make an oil paint
- Complete a simple painting of approximately 400mm x 400mm
