More than 500 New Zealanders die by suicide every year, making it the third most common reason why people die younger than expected. Another 150,000 people think about taking their own life, around 50,000 make a plan to take their own life, and around 20,000 attempt suicide.

All of this behaviour has a devastating and often long-lasting impact on the lives of the people involved. (Ministry of Health, NZ 2017)

Are you interested in being a part of a focused effort to drive down the number of deaths by suicide in New Zealand? If so, join us at the National Zero Suicide Forum.

The forum will bring international thought leaders from the US, Northern Ireland and Australia, Government representatives, clinicians and support organisations to delegates who are working in New Zealand’s suicide prevention and mental health sectors to explore how we can provide integrated suicide prevention care models from crisis-point, to stabilisation and recovery, with a renewed ambitious, relentless resolve to drive down the NZ suicide death rate.

The zero suicide concept and disciplined practices emerged from the ambitious ’perfect depression care’ quality performance improvement initiative at the Henry Ford Health System, Detroit. The results were remarkable, driving the suicide death rate to zero in just three years. With more than 250 zero suicide pilots underway across 14 countries, we are seeing some remarkable reductions within communities adopting this mindset.

This forum will explore adopting a Zero Suicide approach as the basis for suicide prevention activity in New Zealand. To this end, we will also launch the Zero Suicide Academy for organisations looking to adopt a Zero Suicide methodology in their practice.

The National Zero Suicide Forum is designed for delegates and decision makers working within New Zealand’s suicide prevention and mental health sector who provide support in their communities to people with suicidal thoughts. It also invites those with a lived experience who wish to drive down the numbers of deaths from suicide in their communities.
