Wellington-based emerging artist Faith Wilson will undertake a solo exhibition during the month of March at Blue Oyster that will include several live performances developed especially for the 2017 Dunedin Fringe Festival halfway through the month.

As a half-Samoan, half-Palagi artist born in Aotearoa, Wilson’s performance work questions her identity, whose culture she belongs to and where she fits in. This speaks to the wider mainstream Pacific community, many of whom have the same concerns growing up in NZ’s dominant Pakeha culture. To be not white enough and at the same time not brown enough is what Wilson will address and attempt to encourage both sides of herself to connect.

The performances will, therefore, join two conversations but not silence them, encourage them to speak and exist as a lived expression of cultural exchange. To do this, Wilson will perform self-authored works in Samoan attire, to attain an overwrought, clichéd experience that will interrogate the accepted norms of what a Samoan and white girl should be like, sound like and look like.

Accompanying these live works will be several video pieces and installations that will remain in the space for the duration of the month on either side of the Fringe Festival.
