Looking for something different to do this October School holidays? Fascinated by motion? Love to play games?

This holidays, the team here at Mangere Mountain Education Centre have devised an exciting interactive journey of activities that takes kids through time, scientific discovery and fun! An extra special addition to the programme is our pop exhibition, MOTAT: Force In Motion exploring the science of spinning through traditional Maori spinning tops (Pōtaka) complementing the myriad of activities that will keep the kids engaged for hours!

Discover how technology has influenced traditional Maori games through the centuries…and yes, technology is amazing, but the games fundamentals haven’t changed much…they are still all about skill and fun (and the science of physics is still true)!

Burn some energy, have some fun...and learn new skills and knowledge.
Create, learn, play, discover, explore, challenge and win!

Collect your games passport and challenge yourself to complete all the activities; honing your skills and knowledge along the way…

- Hack your own spinning top –create, test and take home
- Earn the title of Toa (Warrior of the Pōtaka – spinning top), who can spin their top for the longest?
- 3D Printing show case - discover how modern 3D printers are changing how we bring design concepts to life
- Have a go with a traditional wooden Pōtaka – can you whip it?
- Get hands on with modern versions and see how they spin and learn some tricks

Experience: Hone your motion activated gaming skills guided by the Mangere Mountain Education Centre team
- Test your reflexes and motor skills using Kōruru (Jackstones/Knucklebones)
- Learn to catch, throw or juggle Poi in rhythm
- Enhance your hand-eye coordination at speed with Titi Tōrea (Stick games)
- Making amazing geometrical patterns with Whai (string games)

Explore the Te Pane O Mataoho (Mangere Mountain) and taking in our history and volcanic landscapes…on a voyage of discovery with one of our guides.

Every child who completes their passport gets to take a future now momento home!

Programme runs throughout the day.
Some activities are self-guided, some are facilitated by our great team of educators.
