Joint exhibition of Mary Taylor and Julia Henderson's stunning new works:

Julia: "My inspiration for these paintings has come from very close to home, my own garden. It is rapidly being taken over by Bromeliads, the fascinating plants that I first came across in Eden Gardens. I had not been in Auckland for long having just arrived from England and I was surprised to discover such exotic plants growing here. Since then I have learnt a lot about them, that they are not delicate, hot-house tropical plants at all.

Rather they are tenacious survivors, able to flourish with little soil, water or food and easily endure our winters. My challenge was to portray their amazing forms and varieties of colours and patterns. I wanted to emphasise these aspects without the distraction of surrounding elements choosing only to include a few supporting players. The titles reference their showy and theatrical beauty and the white background throws them into the spotlight, putting them centre stage."

Mary: "A sanctuary can be defined as a holy place or shrine and also as a place of protection for fugitives. The paintings suggest that in New Zealand there should be special places of safety for our special native birds. People also need places of safety and rest. The painting Simply Summer may suggest such a place.
