Tamsin Waley-Cohen – Violin.
Benjamin Northey – Chief Conductor.

Edward Elgar – Sospiri op. 70.
Samuel Barber – Concerto for Violin op. 14.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5 op. 64 E minor.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was fiercely proud of his Russian heritage and while he was adamant his Fifth Symphony was not a nationalist work, its themes and melodies are heavily imbued with Russian character. It is an unapologetically romantic work, traversing tragedy to joyfulness in a dramatic and grandiose musical journey.

Elgar’s poignant Sospiri (Sighs) was composed in the months preceding the outbreak of World War I. Although originally intended as a companion piece to his wildly popular and sentimental Salut d’amor, Sospiri evoked a far deeper emotional character, possibly reflecting the mounting threat of conflict and growing geopolitical tension of the time.

Counted amongst the most exciting of the new generation of violinists and with playing described by the UK’s Sunday Times as “radiant and soaring”, British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen makes her CSO debut performing Samuel Barber’s lyrical and brilliant Concerto for Violin.

Please note that vehicle access to the Papanui Road entrance of St Margaret's College has been restricted due to safety concerns. The pedestrian entrances on Winchester, Andover and Shrewsbury Streets will be open and there is a carpark on Andover Street for people with mobility stickers and concerns.
