Silver Garburg Piano Duo.
Benjamin Northey – Chief Conductor.

Maurice Ravel – La valse.
Francis Poulenc – Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor.
Arvo Pärt – Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.
Witold Lutosławski – Concerto for Orchestra.

Performing Francis Poulenc’s effervescent and vivacious Concerto for Two Pianos, the CSO is delighted to welcome back to Christchurch the captivating Silver Garburg Piano Duo. With performances in 50 countries across 5 different continents, the Silver Garburg Piano Duo is hailed as one of the leading piano duos performing today.

French impressionist composer Maurice Ravel wrote La valse at the request of ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Unfortunately, the pair fell out and the ballet never eventuated. However, Ravel’s cynical tribute to the waltz lives on.

Polish composer Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Warsaw Philharmonic to celebrate its rebirth after the devastation of the German occupation. It is considered one of the great works of the second half of the 20th century and concludes with an astonishing and dramatic climax.

Arvo Pärt is an Estonian minimalist composer whose music takes inspiration from Medieval and Renaissance instrumental and vocal music. Composed to commemorate Britten’s death, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten is a reflective piece written for strings and a single bell.

Please note that vehicle access to the Papanui Road entrance of St Margaret's College has been restricted due to safety concerns. The pedestrian entrances on Winchester, Andover and Shrewsbury Streets will be open and there is a carpark on Andover Street for people with mobility stickers and concerns.
