Ever wondered how you could get involved in helping out with a startup business or exciting community idea? Don't know where to start?

Then Startup Weekend is just the thing for you!

If you can spare one weekend, are willing to meet people and try new things then come along.

If you don't have an idea, that is fine - come help someone out with theirs, and learn by doing! Anyone can participate - we welcome people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, and with all types of interests.

For $99 we will give you all the support and resources you actually need to really get an idea off the ground and provide great food over the weekend, as well as a great venue and free wifi.

Want to know more?
The event starts on Friday night, where we chat over pizza, run through a couple of icebreaker activities, and then the people who have got a startup idea spend one minute pitching it to a friendly group of keen people. Everyone then gets to choose what idea they want to work on based on the ideas they like best, and then these newly formed teams get to work.

On Saturday, teams focus on understanding the problem they are solving, getting validation, and then use the information they gather to start building their business (or community funded) model, as well as doing work on building their product or service.

Sunday is about getting as far as teams can with developing their product or service and building their customer (or community) base. All teams then finish with a five-minute pitch to a panel of local community judges.

All teams get help from friendly, experienced mentors over the weekend, and support to develop their product or service, and resources to help them make a solid pitch deck by Sunday night.

Why attend?
- You will get a taste of what it's like in the startup world, and learn a tonne first hand about every step of building a startup (at the very least, it'll be a memorable weekend away from your usual daily routine).

- You will get some useful and practical tools (lean canvas, customer validation, business models) and learn how to use them.

- You might find your perfect co-founder and go on to launch a multi-million dollar startup.

- You can take the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

- You can network with some amazing New Zealand entrepreneurs - and ask them questions to your heart's content.

- You will greatly expand your contacts and could build lasting relationships with the most innovative, creative and motivated people in Kapiti. This could mean a new client, employer, business partner, or even a friend!

- Plus, if your team wins, you will get heaps of additional resources and mentorship to help you get your startup off the ground. There are also plenty of investors in the crowd, so if your team's pitch is something special, you might even get investment funding to take your idea to that next step (it happens!).

If you've been looking for an opportunity to try something new and different, or have a go at launching a business or creating a great community-based enterprise then Startup Weekend is for you!

Startup Weekends are a global phenomenon with events being held in over 700 cities across the world; in New Zealand alone, events have been held in Auckland, Tauranga, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Palmerston North, Kapiti. Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill.
