Jono Rotman: Ōmarunui

Brett Graham: He taonga te pai / He taonga te kino

Presenting two series of works that have been recently acquired into the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust Ruawharo Tā-ū-Rangi collection, held by MTG Hawke’s Bay Tai Ahuriri. Jono Rotman’s suite of photographs and Brett Graham’s series of prints both relate to local violent colonial history, centred around a conflict that took place on 12th October 1866 at Ōmarunui, not far from Napier. Leaders of the attacking force, made up of settler militia and allied members of local hapū, appear in Rotman’s ethereal portraits; while Graham utilises text and Pai Mārire imagery related to the defending group to critique the way this history has been constructed over the last 151 years.
