Strength-based, practical strategies to support children with autism in the primary school setting

Autism New Zealand is delighted to present this Intro to Autism programme thanks to Ministry of Education Hawkes Bay, Strengthening Early Learning Opportunities (SELO) funding.

This programme consists of one workshop open to all, and a centre visit and final workshop open to up to 20 centres with a child with autism.

Learning Outcomes:
Identify how autism may impact on, and is expressed in, a child with autism
Create and use visual supports to reduce anxiety and increase independence
Develop an autism-friendly physical environment, and engage peer support
Use stories to support understanding, develop self esteem and give information
Adapt classroom lessons, and support independence in classroom and playground
Analyse and manage inappropriate behaviour.

Centre Visit, either 7 or 8 June, times to be arranged with your Educator. A workshop participant and the child with autism must be present for your centre visit.

Final Workshop, 14 June, 2pm – 5pm
