Get out and get involved in this brilliant conservational project! Inanga are one of the 5 species of native fish whose young are also known as Whitebait. Inanga make up about 95% of the whitebait but their populations are unfortunately declining! This is due to their spawning habitat being destroyed or modified by humans and stock. They need long grasses, rushes or flax alongside the rivers/streams to lay their eggs in. To mimic this habitat, we have installed straw bales in the riparian margin of a stream in Kaiaua for the freshwater fish to hopefully spawn in.

Come down for our community day to learn a bit about these fish and check the straw bales for eggs with us. We will also be setting up some traps to try and catch some live fish to check out and ID! Fingers crossed for a beautiful day in beautiful Kaiaua for a fantastic family day out, just bring your gumboots!

This is all happening at the reserve located down the road from the Pink Shop! Turn off the main road at the shop and follow the road towards the fire station and look for the large Living Waters flags.
