In this public talk, Shugen Sensei discusses a central insight of Buddhist meditation practice: the illusory nature of the self.

The Buddha was enlightened through a direct realisation of the unborn mind. This mind is not the brain, thoughts or ideas, yet it includes all that we can perceive, imagine and know. This talk will explore the understanding of mind and how it leads to our experience of ourselves, others and the world, in ways that can create both heaven and hell. This is not an intellectual or abstract matter, but rather, gets to the heart of both our pain and our deep desire for peace and serenity in this lifetime.

Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Sensei is the Guiding Teacher of the Mountains and Rivers Order in New Zealand. He is the abbot Zen Mountain Monastery, in upstate New York, and of the Zen Center of New York City. Shugen Sensei visits Nelson annually, and this year will lead a programme including a public talk, weekend retreat, and week-long silent meditation intensive.

Entry by donation.
