Ten years of New Zealand’s best music teaching

“In art, the best is the standard. When you hear a new violinist, you do not compare him to the kid next door; you compare him to Sternand Heifetz.” - Ursula K Le Guin

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, ten years of ongoing success, the Akaroa Music Festival is New Zealand’s premiere residential music school. Every January, an array of distinguished international classical musicians provide ten days of lessons, masterclasses, and concerts against the breathtaking backdrop of one of the world’s most beautiful seaside towns. The festival accepts advanced and enthusiastic young musicians from all over New Zealand and abroad. Classes are open to school students, university students, and adults.

Wolfgang Kraemer studied recorder with Marion Michel at the Conservatory of Luxembourg. His teachers also included Armgard Pudelko and Walter van Hauwe. He has toured Europe, Asia and New Zealand as a soloist and member of various baroque ensembles, and for ten years he was the director of the Jugendmusikschule Untere Saar school for musically gifted children in Merzig, Germany. From 2006 – 2013, he has taught at the University of Canterbury. He founded the ensemble Il Raccolto, specializing in the authentic interpretation of Baroque music. He is the director of the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music and the International Akaroa Summer Festival.

Ten years old and going from strength to strength, the Akaroa Music Festival is building the future of New Zealand music.
