Ten years of New Zealand’s best music teaching.

“In art, the best is the standard. When you hear a new violinist, you do not compare him to the kid next door; you compare him to Sternand Heifetz.” - Ursula K Le Guin

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, ten years of ongoing success, the Akaroa Music Festival is New Zealand’s premiere residential music school. Every January, an array of distinguished international classical musicians provide ten days of lessons, masterclasses, and concerts against the breathtaking backdrop of one of the world’s most beautiful seaside towns. The festival accepts advanced and enthusiastic young musicians from all over New Zealand and abroad. Classes are open to school students, university students, and adults.

Lauded for his “remarkable technical skills,” “hall-filling tone” and “expressive poetry,” cellist Alvin Wong has performed as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician across the Americas,  Europe, and Asia-Pacific. He has performed with musicians such as Ani Kavafian, Jian Wang, and Philippe Entremont. An advocate of new music, he has premiered concertos and cello works by composers such as Barry Conyngham, Chen Yi, Angel Lam and Stuart Greenbaum. Alvin studied with Janos Starker and Aldo Parisot and received the Doctor of Musical Arts and Artist Diploma from Yale. He is currently Lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Ten years old and going from strength to strength, the Akaroa Music Festival is building the future of New Zealand music.
