This exhibition showcases items stitched by members of the Taupo Embroiderers’ Guild since their last exhibition in October 2013. It is hoped or expected the works will become heirlooms and treasured by family, friends or whoever eventually possesses them.

Table linen, samplers, Christmas decorations large and small, pictures and wall-hangings, needle working accessories such as scissor keepers and pincushions, 3-dimensional work, plus a ‘challenge’ section entitled ‘Best Mates’.

Members will give the community an opportunity to see how some of the stitching is done with ‘stitch in’s’ on Saturday, May 13 & 27 and Queens Birthday Weekend Saturday, June 3 from 10am till 2pm.

A cream hand-stitched quilt featuring NZ flowers plus a framed picture are being raffled, these will become heirlooms in the homes of the lucky winners.

The Taupo Embroiderers' Guild has been in existence since 1984, initially under the umbrella of the Taupo Society of Arts (now Active Arts) where early meetings were held as well as in members’ homes.

Meeting times and places have changed over the years as have the needs and interests and numbers of members, but meetings (work sessions really, plenty of stitch and chat and exchange of ideas, patterns, expertise plus formal workshops) are well-established at the Vintage Car Club rooms in A C Baths Ave every Wednesday and alternate Tuesdays from 9:30 till noon.

Taupo Embroiderers’ Guild is one of 59 throughout NZ affiliated to the Association of NZ Embroiderers’ Guilds (ANZEG) which enables boundless opportunities for mixing with and learning from others on so many levels including exhibitions, conferences, weekend stitching retreats, workshops, visiting other guilds, and the wonderful twice-yearly publication ‘Threads’.

There are currently 43 members several of whom have belonged for 25 years or more. They range from very experienced to beginners, some excel at a particular technique, others try everything but have particular favourites, some are more creative and experimental than others. Visitors to the museum will be able to see a variety of embroideries in progress at the stitch-ins on 3 Saturdays during the time the exhibition is open.

New members are always welcome and can be assured they will be assisted and guided and supported in learning new skills if they wish - you definitely don’t have to be already an embroiderer.
Exhibitions are held approx. every 2 years, with a particular theme and usually a challenge section, a hand-stitched quilt or similar as a raffle, and viewers are invited to vote for their favourite piece – always a difficult choice.
