Gwavas Garden and Homestead will once again open their private Puahanui Bush for visitors on four very special dates across September & October.

This incredible 132 hectares of virgin bush is home to Totara known to be at least 600, possibly 800 years old. Not usually open to the public the guided walk through the bush will take around 1.5 hours after which guests will enjoy a sit-down lunch, served in the hall of Gwavas Garden Homestead.

After lunch visitors will be guided through the homestead itself which was built in 1890 for ASG Carlyon and has since that day remained in the Carlyon family.

The day will end with a guided tour of Gwavas' 9 hectares 'Cornish Woodland Garden', Stu Gibson will talk through the history and philosophy of the garden which is at its peak in September, October & November and is registered as a Garden of National Significance by the NZ Garden Trust.

Spaces are limited to a maximum of 30 people per day, over 4 days, so be in early to secure your spot, last year this event sold out quickly.

Note: This event is not suitable for small children. There are no tracks in the bush and the terrain, although not especially steep is uneven so a reasonable level of fitness is required. We will be moving through the bush as a group, there will not be the opportunity to wander off individually. Sensible footwear is essential.

Gwavas Garden, Homestead & Puahanui Bush Tours are part of 'The Spring Fling' - a series of standout events that capture the essence of springtime in Central Hawke’s Bay.
