Speaker Bios:
Kassie Hartendorp is of Ngāti Raukawa and Pākeha descent and grew up all around the southern end of Te Ika a Māui. She has been based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara for the past eight years and calls it home.

Kassie’s work is in the interconnection of issues, looking at the big picture of what anti-capitalism and decolonisation/indigenisation means for Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa, and connecting the dots back to how we make a change on the ground. She is currently a youth worker in the city and is studying Māori Laws and Philosophy at Te Wānanga o Raukawa.

Karam Shaar is a Syrian national studying his PhD in Economics at the Victoria University of Wellington. As he lived in Syria before the conflict and took place in the early protests that later turned into a civil war, he will share with you his first-hand experiences of the current civil war and crisis.

Karam has published opinion articles on the issue in both Arabic and in English and took place in a large number of activities protesting the status quo while living in Syria. He will also share with you what he believes is actually taking place currently in Syria, and how and why things have reached this point.
