The Grafia Story. "Ultimately Free".

Grafia is an acronym for "Get Right Away From It All". It is also a group of musicians and artists, photographers, designers, video/film makers, writers and poets who love to express themselves collectively which results in the band's songs being written, played and illustrated. This group so far has had about fifteen contributors and we have recently made our first recording of original songs.

It's five years since we started playing songs together and organising performances and concerts. A lot of fun has been had and our ability to entertain and play music that is both listenable to and exciting is growing and gaining considerable acclaim. This is due to the passion and application of key members of the band.

Keith Austin, our keyboard maestro, who also plays electric bass and piano accordion. Backing Keith, with his "serious" musical ability, is violin and recorder playing instrumentalist, Stephan Schulz, who transforms the lives of scores of young people every year by teaching them the love of a relationship with music in his day job as head of music at the local secondary school, Chanel College.

The third member of the core trio is Rob Maunsell, who has grown into his role as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. He also loves to play the harmonica and does this tastefully, mostly at appropriate times, in songs that are blues inspired. Filling out the rhythm section of the band are Jordan Tredray and John Jukes on drums and percussion. Jordan started drumming early in life and had a reputation for his amazing versatility and driving playing style even in his mid teens.

Now a little older and vastly more experienced he adds a palpable rhythmical backbone to the band's sound. John has been drumming since his late teens and has an insatiable passion for sitting at a set of drums driving the engine room of the band. Individually or together they make the band "cook".

The core trio of Rob, Keith and Stephan have recorded a collection of original songs, written by Rob and arranged by the trio at their weekly practice sessions at Rob's home in Masterton where the three of them live.

Jordan is also a Masterton native, with John having his home base in Central Hawkes Bay. Titles of the songs include "Think about it", a thought provoking boogie blues led by Keith on piano, "The Archivist" a folk ballard with a memorable chorus, and "Quietly going blues", an ode to Rob's father, John, set in an extended slow-tempo blues form.

The recording was done at Keith's home studio with contributions by friends, Lenny Te Whare, Clare Christian Stefan Brown and Jacq Knox. Currently, Sherry James is lending her voice to provide backing vocals at some shows and alto sax player Andrew Miller from Auckland joins us whenever he can.

The performances Grafia has created over the last five years have included many other local musicians and bands. Together with their artist, photographer, video maker, A J Hunter, who covers the gambit of artistic needs from poster design, photography, video imagery, screen presentations and website development, Grafia is playing with an inspiring palette of musical colours and styles that are bound to appeal to many and varied tastes.
