The Bentley Effect NZ Tour: “Award winning film celebrates the power of a united community. First New Zealand screening.

When communities are faced with the threat of wide scale industrialisation and up against the most powerful industries on the planet, success stories are rare and precious.

The story of The Northern Rivers’ remarkable and heroic social movement to protect the region from gas mining has been called: “gripping” (Giles Parkinson, Renew Economy), “hopeful, tearful, funny and poignant,” (Cate McQuillan, Producer/Director, Dirt Girl World) and “Grass roots community fight back at its best. 5 stars.” (Richard Todd, Director, Frackman).

A six year labour of love from Director and Producer, Brendan Shoebridge.

The Bentley Effect faithfully chronicles the ‘Gasfield - free’ campaign from first hearing news of ‘good, clean energy’ resources, to the fateful showdown at the gates of Bentley, near Lismore. The reception to the film has been extraordinary, receiving regular standing ovations at its screenings to date. “I was completely blown away by the audience reaction to The Bentley Effect” Brendan Shoebridge said “I‘ve been honoured and humbled by such an emotional response to the film.”

“It is a tremendous relief to know that it has ticked all the many b oxes it had to. The first priority was to ensure it was entertaining, but I didn’t want to make a film that people would simply watch either. I wanted to offer the audience an experience, the next best thing to being there on the blockades. It also had to inspire hope and stay true to what played out.”

The film is not just the story of a social movement however. Weaved throughout the commentary is a much broader discussion about the current political climate and the inability of our government to see beyond short term gain and corporate profits.

“It’s a poignant time to be screening this documentary. With life as we know it seemingly hanging in the balance and so many battles playing out on so many fronts, audiences are craving stories of hope and courage. It is ultimately about standing up to corporate greed and the general madness” says Shoebridge.

“If we don’t all act now and make the transitions that, at some level we all know are necessary, then we really have blown it and this amazing beauty and privilege we currently enjoy in this part of the world will all be reduced to a dreadful battle for survival. That’s what people must understand, especially the decision makers we elect. It’ s frightening to witness our politicians batting for big corporations so blatantly instead of their communities.

But people power still works and that’s what we see playing out on screen–the power of a united community,” says Shoebridge. “I feel thrilled and honoured to be heading over the ditch to share this true life ‘Lord of the Rings’ tale. New Zealand’s unique and precious beauty holds a special place in everyone’s hearts and I’m hoping the film will inspire local audiences to keep it safe and pure.”

The film has won a number of international film awards including Best Documentary at the Planet Barcelona Film Festival and the Moondance International Film Festival, BBIFF’s Byron Film Award, the Activist Award at Earth Day Film Festival, the Audience Award at Something Somewhere Film Festival and Awards of Excellence and Special Mentions at this years Impact Doc Awards and the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.

The Bentley Effect is touring nationally from September 24th to November 12th. Following the screening, local audiences will have the opportunity to stay for a Q&A session with the film’s Director and key characters from the film.
