50 Works Gallery

Edwards + Johann have been working together since 2007. Visual storytellers interested in the gaps, the unseen, the untold, the unfinished, the unpolished and the uneasy...

“It is On the seam of things that most of our works develop and evolve; this seam is a point of connection but also a space of friction, tension and inevitable fragility. For us this territory reflects a basic human condition... to connect, work, play and test the space we inhabit in order to grow... and deal with crisis.”

Edwards+Johann draw on a long career as individual artists. Their collaborative work interweaves drawing, painting, performative activities, video and installation with photography. Utilising a range of media and methods in their work, their collaborative approach is a process based research lab. Sole authorship becomes obsolete in the process of making new work and in any of their projects/exhibitions.

They re-search the world they are living in... They continue to be curious about the concept of the doppelgӓnger as the underlying motif to probe the ‘I’ and the ‘not I’ in order to play out scenarios of being.

In 2016 they were the Supreme Winners of the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award and in 2017 year they received a Highly Commended Award in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award. In recent years they have been winners in the LACDA 2014 International Juried Competition Los Angeles; Finalists in The Wallace Art Awards with work included in the Award Winners & Traveling Finalists show (2014, 2015, 2016); Finalist in the Parkin Drawing Prize (2014, 2015, 2016) and Finalists in the National Contemporary Art Award 2014, 2015.

Their major exhibition, Rebels, Knights and Other Tomorrows, with the Christchurch Art Gallery Outer Spaces Projects 2014 and practice was featured in the CAG Bulletin with an article Thieves in the Attic by Sally Blundell.
