Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

Prokofiev’s concerto contains his trademark sunlit melodies, harmonic shifts, and angular writing. Sibelius’ symphony is one of his best-loved works. Its turmoil and triumph are thought to depict Finland’s struggle for independence.

Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts, a 2017 Michael Hill International Violin Competition jury member, is internationally renowned for his extremely virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretations. Conducting will be Marc Taddei, currently Music Director for both Orchestra Wellington and California’s Vallejo Symphony Orchestra.

To celebrate NZ Music Month, the concert starts with Luminous by leading NZ composer John Psathas.
