The ability to transcribe form through line and tone begins with an understanding of drawing as a process. Gesture, contour and modelling are three fundamental techniques to mark making. Each has a different aim and must be used with appropriate materials and at suitable scales.

Contour is a linear way of defining form, modelling is a composite of shifting tone and edge, while gesture incorporates both and is the most expansive and expressive of all.
